FORT MYERS, Fla. — Another day, another Red Sox rumor.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the Red Sox have some interest in free agent shortstop Trevor Story.
Heyman tweeted, “After losing out on Freddie Freeman, Red Sox are taking a look at Trevor Story. One catch: he would likely have to play 2B as 2-time WS champ Xander Bogaerts is the SS. Other possible options for Story: Cards, Twins, Astros, more.”
The Red Sox need to add a right-handed hitter and that market is becoming quite thin.
Story, a 29-year-old right-handed batter, has a career .272 batting average, .340 on-base percentage, .523 slugging percentage, .863 OPS, 158 homers, 180 doubles, 27 triples and 100 steals in 745 career games (595 plate appearances).
He had a bit of a down year in 2021, slashing .251/.329/.471/.801 with 24 homers, 34 doubles and five triples in 142 games (595 plate appearances). But he still posted a 3.5 fWAR.
He’s an above-average fielder at shortstop. He had 9 defensive runs saved in 2021 while Bogaerts had -5.
So it would be interesting if Boston signed Story as a second baseman instead of putting the better defender at shortstop and moving Bogaerts to second base.
The Red Sox haven’t discussed a potential move to second base with Bogaerts. But he has heard the speculation in the media.
“It’s like sometimes I don’t even know if I’m on the team,” Bogaerts said Tuesday. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m here?’ But it’s what you do. You guys have got stories to write and you guys have more info on that type of stuff than us as players have. It’s out of my control. I really can’t do much about it. But sometimes you see it and you’re like, ‘Hey, I exist. I’m here.’ It is what it is.”
He doesn’t want to change positions.
“I’m a shortstop, man,” Bogaerts said. “That’s where I’ve played my whole career and obviously a position I take a lot of pride in... I love being there.”
