SARANAC LAKE — After a pandemic-imposed hiatus, the Adirondack Center for Writing and North Country Public Radio are once again teaming up to host the Howl Story Slam for its sixth season at venues all over North Country. The season’s theme is “All in a Day’s Work.”

The first event in the line-up will be held at Township 7 Brewing Company in Dickinson Center on June 23 at 7 p.m. The price of admission is a $5-10 suggested donation. Other venues include Keeseville (Ausable Brewing, July 20), Saranac Lake (Waterhole, Aug 20), Bolton Landing (Bolton Landing Brewing Co, Sept. 13), with October and November venues to be announced.

Howl Story Slam is a night of live, spirited stories told by anyone who would like to sign up. The rules are that your story must be true, must be told in under five minutes, and must be told without notes and unscripted. Judges will score stories, and at the end of the event, one person will be crowned the winner. Winning storytellers are given an invite to perform at ACW’s “Grand Slam” event in late 2022, date to be announced.

“After the pandemic forced most of our recent story slams online, we’re relieved to be back in person at bars across the North Country. Hearing a story told live in this way is not only amusing and moving, but it can truly bring a community together, showing even the closest friends new sides to one another,” said ACW Executive Director Nathalie Thill.

Anyone can sign up to tell a story by simply arriving on the night of the event and putting their name in a hat. Names will be selected at random, and each storyteller will take the stage in turn to tell their best tale in under five minutes. No need to be a professional storyteller: Participants are encouraged to simply speak from the heart. Howl welcomes first-time storytellers, and even though there’s an aspect of competition, the hosts Nathalie Thill and Mitch Reich ensure the atmosphere is fun, supportive and communal.

With this season’s theme, “All in a Day’s Work,” Howl storytellers can consider first jobs, worst jobs, an unforgettable day of labor, a household chore, a surprising assignment, or simply a story set in the office. Participants should feel free to define “work” as broadly as they like.

“As always, we want a story with strong conflict, or a journey with some real obstacles,” Thill said. “Remember our advice: get quick to the action; practice, practice, practice; and stick to the theme. We can’t wait to hear you on the mic at a Howl Story Slam this summer.”
