I have been struggling, post-surgery, with a bleak outlook, especially given our long rainy spring. I have been weaning myself off online news because it is relentlessly negative. I want to be informed but the cost has become too high, at least right now. I have wanted to continue the daily papers but keep squinting at the headlines for fear of seeing horror, close at home or far away.
Then last week, I opened The Oregonian and saw the front page about Joy, the parrot who has brought community to a handful of Portlanders, new and entrenched, old and young (“‘A little bird brought a community together,’” June 22). The relief and happiness I’ve felt reading that report of loss and reunion shared by kind, ordinary people is practically indescribable.
Thank you for giving us this lifeline. I hope you will continue to bring us local news to uplift and inspire us.
