Couple who escaped burning home share their story, suspicions - WWNY

TOWN OF HAMMOND, New York (WWNY) - A St. Lawrence County couple is picking up the pieces after jumping out of a bedroom window to escape a burning home in the town of Hammond last week.

Olanta Clement and James Pribble shared their story and suspicions with 7 News on Tuesday.

“I opened the window and just kicked the screen out,” said Clement.

They had been living in the home at 2316 County Route 6 for only a month when it caught fire. The blaze drew around 60 firefighters from 7 different departments.

“We cleaned up the place. We got it all livable. We got a pet, which ended up dying in the fire,” said Clement.

The two woke up in the home just before 1 a.m. to people banging on their window yelling “fire” and “get out!”

“We thought somebody was joking around, messing with us, until we looked out the window and saw the reflection of the fire,” said Pribble.

Though the two escaped the fire, the blaze hasn’t escaped their minds. Both say when they close their eyes, they can still see the flames.

“I’m still smelling smoke at night when I go to bed. I’m having a hard time sleeping at night. I’m still processing it all,” said Pribble.

“I still see the fire when I close my eyes. It’s not good,” said Clement.

The two now live with a friend in Ogdensburg and believe the fire was no accident.

“To know that somebody can do that, and go to those lengths just to either get rid of a house or somebody living in it. It’s scary to think they would go to those lengths,” said Pribble.

St. Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Matthew Denner says his office has not determined the cause yet. The fire is still under investigation.
