WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Fellow Travelers episode 3.

Summary

  • Fellow Travelers explores the secret romance of Hawk and Tim, representing the struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals working in the government in the 1950s.
  • The hypocrisy of Senator Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn, who led the anti-LGBTQ+ movement in the 1950s, is highlighted as they may have been closeted homosexuals themselves.
  • Tim discloses his terminal illness, Kaposi sarcoma, and his weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS, showcasing the devastating impact of the disease during the 1980s epidemic.

Fellow Travelers episode 3 continues the secret romance between Hawk Fuller and Tim Laughlin in a 1950s Washington D.C. that is plagued by the Red and Lavender Scare. Spearheaded by Senator Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, and David Schine, the U.S. State Department increased efforts in the early 1950s to identify and eliminate all "subversives" and "deviants" from the ranks of the federal government. Hawk and Tim, while fictional, represent the extreme lengths that LBGTQ+ people working in the U.S. government at the time were forced to go in concealing their sexual identities for the sake of their careers.

Fellow Travelers episode 2 started to peel back the layers of the Lavender Scare and the true motivations of the leader of the Subcommittee of Investigations, Roy Cohn, who was largely responsible for the Rosenberg executions. New developments in Fellow Travelers episode 3 insinuate that Cohn and McCarthy could actually be closeted homosexuals themselves, making their national war on LGBTQ+ liberties incredibly ironic and disturbing. The real-life Cohn was eventually revealed to be gay and died in 1986 of complications due to AIDS despite denying that he ever had HIV his entire life.

10 Tim Tells Hawk He Has A Form Of Cancer Called Kaposi Sarcoma

Tim Also Has PCP Due To A Weakened Immune System From HIV/AIDS

Older Tim in Fellow Travelers episode 3

During a flash forward segment of Fellow Travelers episode 3, which takes place in San Franciso in 1986, Tim discloses to Hawk that he is dying of a rare form of cancer called Kaposi sarcoma. Tim explains that the lesions he has on his body are a strong indicator that he does not have much more time to live, especially since he had previously been diagnosed with PCP, which is common in people who have weakened immune systems from HIV/AIDS. Upon hearing this news, Tim escapes to the bathroom to silently display his horror at having to lose Tim, who has become understandably bitter and angry at the world after his serious medical issues.

9 Marcus Starts An Affair With “Cozy Corner” Bartender Frankie

Frankie Is Also A Drag Queen & Invites Marcus To A Drag Show

Marcus and Frankie in Fellow Travelers episode 3

After making several advances on Marcus at the Cozy Corner bar, Frankie is finally successful at developing a romance with him. Marcus admits that he is usually into other types of men, a fact which he tells Frankie that he is unapologetic about. Both Marcus and Frankie are unapologetic about their sexual identities in their own ways. However, Frankie is less concerned about the consequences of his sexuality during 1950s McCarthyism because he is not surrounded by federal government employees all the time like Marcus is. Frankie invites Marcus to a drag show he will appear in, although Marcus has concerns about the racial leanings of the venue.

8 An Army General Tells Roy Cohn That David Schine Will Be Drafted

Marcus’s Note To Kennedy Raised Issue Of Schine’s “4F” Military Classification

Roy Cohn and David Schine in Fellow Travelers episode 3

The end of Fellow Travelers episode 2 saw Marcus hand Senator Robert Kennedy evidence that pointed to the suspicious nature of David Schine's 4F military classification. Upon further investigation, Schine's military status was changed from 4F (unfit for duty) to 1A (able to serve). This would make it required by law for Schine to enlist in the U.S. military if called upon just like every other registered member, regardless of social status or wealth. Cohn attempts to pressure a U.S. Major General in Fellow Travelers episode 3 in order to protect Schine but does so rather foolishly, hinting that there is likely some type of ulterior motive Cohn has for keeping Schine around.

Hawk Also Tries To Dig Up Dirt On McCarthy While He’s There

Tim and Hawk on the beach in Fellow Travelers episode 3

Hawk spontaneously invites Tim to a weekend getaway in seaside New York, which Tim reluctantly but earnestly accepts. Tim has no clue that Hawk is also there to conduct some business to dig up some dirt about Senator Joseph McCarthy. Hawk uses his military connections to meet with Cpl. Daniel Cherny, who has evidence that Hawk and potentially Senator Smith or Marcus could use to take down McCarthy once and for all. Hawk leaves Tim at the bar where he is approached by another man, but Tim fends him off and goes looking for Hawk. Tim finds Hawk in a motel room and storms off, unaware that Hawk was digging up dirt on his boss.

6 Marcus Is Denied Entry To A Racist Restaurant & Drag Show Venue

Frankie Comes Out To Defend Marcus Which Only Makes Matters Worse

Marcus in Fellow Travelers episode 3

Marcus takes up Frankie on his offer to attend the drag performance at a swanky but predominantly white restaurant. He is initially not allowed in due to a complication with the seating list and waits outside for quite some time. Eventually, Marcus loses his patience and questions what could be taking so long. The host of the restaurant tells Marcus that he was in fact on the list but cannot be accommodated due to an overbooking issue. Marcus sees the situation for what it really is and calls the host out for segregation, which is when Frankie comes out to diffuse the situation. Frankie defends Marcus, who doesn't want help since it will make him look suspicious in the public eye.

5 Tim Demands That Hawk Takes Him On A Formal Restaurant Date

Tim’s Naive Passion Leads Him To Cause A Scene At Dinner

Hawk Fuller at dinner in Fellow Travelers episode 3

After Hawk explains that he wasn't up to anything but business in the motel room, Tim demands that the two of them go out on a formal dinner date, something they have never been able to do in D.C. Tim masquerades as Hawk's nephew and is intent on enjoying the evening without having to focus too hard on concealing the situation. Tim gets drunk and sings for a couple at the next table over, which Hawk finds endearing but also fears they are drawing unnecessary attention. Tim sees the couple kiss and realizes that he and Hawk do not have the luxury of embracing like that in public, sending Tim off in fury from the dinner table and forcing Hawk to cover for him.

4 Hawk Tells Tim How He Got A Scar On His Back During WWII

Hawk Reveals His Squad Was Pinned Down By 2 Krupp K5s

Tim touching Hawk's scar in Fellow Travelers episode 3

Hawk reveals to Tim how he got a scar on his bar from his service in World War II. He explains that he was leading a squad of 4 soldiers in Italy but found themselves pinned down and trapped by two enemy artillery guns called Krapps K5s. Hawk tells the tragic tale of how he nearly died that day and was lucky to make it out alive with just the scar, reflecting on how two of his soldiers didn't make it out alive from that situation. The boyish Tim gawks in amazement at Hawk's bravery, relieved that he has never been forced into war like Hawk had been.

3 Hawk Pays Cpl. Daniel Cherny For Evidence Supporting McCarthy Allegations

Hawk Meets With Young Veteran Who Accused McCarthy Of Sodomy

Cpl. Daniel Cherney in Fellow Travelers episode 3

Hawk finished his business with Cpl. Daniel Cherny, who reveals to Hawk an allegation against Senator Joseph McCarthy of homosexual activity and potential sexual assault. Cherny accuses McCarthy of sodomizing him while he was drunk and gives Hawk photo evidence that the two had met along with a signed letter describing the events. A similar letter was actually written about McCarthy in real life, which claimed that McCarthy had picked the young Army veteran up at a bar and sexually assaulted him in 1952. Hawk will likely take the evidence to his mentor Senator Smith or his trusted ally Marcus Gaines in Fellow Travelers episode 4.

2 Joseph McCarthy Abruptly Marries His Assistant After Homosexual Speculation

McCarthy's Researcher Jean Kerr Points Out That He, Cohn, & Schine Are All Bachelors

Joseph McCarthy in Fellow Travelers episode 3

McCarthy married a researcher who was working in his office in 1953 once speculation began to circulate about the curious nature of McCarthy, Cohn, and Schine's mutual bachelor status. Without ostensibly knowing Jean Kerr very well outside their professional relationship, McCarthy abruptly married her seemingly out of the blue. The rash action appeared to be a cover-up and a response to the suspicions around McCarthy, who was waging a war on Communism and "subversives" but was not a family man. To seemingly improve his image, McCarthy was able to convince Kerr to marry him during the height of the Red and Lavender Scares.

1 Hawk Gets Tested For HIV/AIDS After Meeting With Tim In 1986

Tim Suggests That Hawk Should Get Tested Given His Medical State

Older Hawk and Older Tim in Fellow Travelers episode 3

During the 1986 segments, Tim tells Hawk that he should get tested for HIV/AIDs considering their previous romantic involvement. After three episodes of Fellow Travelers, it's unclear exactly when was the last time that Hawk and Tim had been intimate. It is also revealed that Hawk had continued to have sexual relations with men while being a well-established family man with a wife, children, and grandkids. It appears that Hawk had never changed over the decades of knowing Tim and still refused to accept his true sexual identity throughout the 1960s and 1970s, which are set to be the temporal settings of future Fellow Travelers episodes.
