Warning! SPOILERS about Expats episodes 1 and 2 ahead.
Amazon Prime Video’s Expats episodes 1 and 2 introduced multiple storylines over two timelines, setting up as many questions as revelations about Margaret, Mercy, and Hilary’s stories and how they intertwined. Based on The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, Expats switches the book’s timeline by introducing in the Expats series premiere events happening at the end of the book, with the tragedy only remembered through the protagonists’ eyes. The change leaves many questions to be answered, about Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy’s lives and what the aftermath of Gus's disappearance caused to the community of American expats in Hong Kong.
By presenting Margaret and Mercy’s changed lives months after Gus’s disappearance and the estrangement its aftermath entailed for Hilary and them, Expats episode 1 offers a snapshot of the many lives the tragedy impacted. Simultaneously, Expats episode 2 provides the necessary backstory explaining Margaret’s erratic behavior and requests to Hilary, showing all the seemingly inconsequential developments leading up to the inconceivable tragedy. This way, Expats episodes 1 and 2 provide the full backstory to why Margaret, Mercy, and Hilary are stuck, unable to progress with their lives, setting up the perfect starting point for the story to follow.

What did David lie about & how did it impact them?
When Margaret first saw Hilary in the foyer, it was clear Hilary wanted to escape from her. Not only had Hilary avoided answering Margaret’s invitation to Clarke’s birthday party, but she also felt clearly distressed by the chance meeting, and when she told David about it, it seemed faintly related to something involving David that happened after Gus’s disappearance. However, when Hilary and Margaret connected after the party, they clicked immediately despite the initial awkwardness. Expats episode 1 only hinted at the possible reasons for Hilary’s unease, but the exchange might suggest David’s fault in the tragedy’s aftermath.
Clarke Visiting The Church & Philip Drawing Gus With Jesus May Be Linked
Margaret was baffled by the drawing because they weren't religious
Philip drawing his family and including Gus next to Jesus deeply worried Margaret, because she saw Gus represented in the drawing and that forced her to face her feelings in public, but also because Jesus wasn’t something she ever discussed with Philip or Daisy. Her inability to understand the reasoning behind such a drawing already puzzled her, but the explanations Clarke hastily provided at the party also hinted he might have had something to do with that, especially considering that the first scene introducing his character in Expats saw Clarke in a church.
Margaret's Secret Apartment Shows How Much She's Hiding From Her Family
She doesn't have space to feel the loss at home
Expats season 1 didn’t expand on Margaret’s Kowloon apartment besides what she told Hilary, but the little it said about that storyline still highlighted how much she kept secret from her family. Indeed, the scene saw Margaret partially furnish the room before cleaning it, and spending the entire day in it, as she left only when it was dark outside. Coupled with Margaret’s revelations to Hilary, it’s obvious she doesn’t feel able to process what happened at home, as Clarke pushes them towards letting life go on, and Daisy and Philip cope in their own ways, all incomprehensible for Margaret.
Mercy's Reaction Highlights How Much The Ordeal Affected Her Too
She can't seem to make space for her feelings, running away from them
Margaret’s explosive reaction at Clarke’s party underlined how unnatural it felt to throw a party after what happened with Gus, but Mercy’s reaction to realizing she was working at the same party celebrating Clarke’s 50th birthday was equally illustrative of her strong feelings. Mercy couldn’t believe where she was, and she literally ran away from the job, ending up vomiting as she left the building. The high-intensity moment proved that the ordeal obviously affected Margaret and Gus’s family, but it also profoundly riddled with guilt Mercy, who couldn’t face the Woos so much so that she fled the scene.

Big Little Lies wrapped up the main characters' storylines, however, over four years later, season 3 could help solve some unanswered questions.Margaret Opening Up To Hilary Finally Lets Her Admit What She's Feeling
Their talk is the first time Margaret tells anybody about the apartment in Kowloon
Margaret and Hilary’s honest conversation at the restaurant was a breath of fresh air even just because they managed to discuss something unrelated to their present lives, but Margaret’s revelations flowing out of her also proved it was Hilary’s support to prompt her to admit the truth. With Hilary, Margaret had the space to admit all her difficult emotions to herself, and their honest heart-to-heart was the first time Margaret voiced them. The exchange consolidated Margaret and Hilary’s bond, as no matter what had occurred between them, they still brought the truth out of each other because of it.
Margaret's Issues With Essie's Boundaries Prompt Her To Know Mercy
Had Gus not insisted on spending time with Essie, she wouldn't have contacted Mercy
Expats episode 2 not only introduced Gus’s tendency to run away, but it also showed his fondness for Essie. That wouldn’t have been a problem had Margaret not felt that Essie wasn’t respecting the family’s boundaries, but because of the conflict between them, she felt inclined to offer Mercy a chance as a nanny despite not knowing her for long. While Gus’s disappearance would have destroyed them no matter when it happened, it could potentially hurt even more because they involved Mercy too soon, acting hastily to try and solve the problems with Essie, instead unwittingly letting a tragedy unfold.
Mercy & Her Peers' Differences Pushed Her Towards Margaret & Her Family
Philena's friends couldn't handle Mercy's brutal honesty
While Expats episode 1 showed Mercy faring better with Philena and her friends when she met them, episode 2 wholly highlighted her unease with her peers on the boat. Mercy’s nonchalance in revealing her supposed curse left those equal in age to her rattled, making her realize how she really couldn’t fit in with them. Mercy’s realization, coupled with Margaret’s welcoming outlook when she saw her coming out of the water, pushed her toward the Woos, as Mercy felt more accepted by them than her peers in Expats episode 2.
Hilary's Conflict With Motherhood Exacerbates Her Relationship With David
His interest in having kids is directly proportional to her disinterest in being a mother
Although Hilary’s visit to the children's institution in Expats episode 2 showed her trying to familiarize herself with children, her stance on motherhood seemed unchanged. David’s perspective was instead the opposite, with him excited about getting pregnant or considering adoption, to the point of rambling to Sam before meeting Hilary at dinner and staying sober for the occasion. With their marriage already wavering, their opposite stance on the matter seemed particularly foreboding, especially as Hilary refused to come clean with David and considering their lack of communication in the present, making Hilary’s appraisal of their relationship’s end potentially true.
The tragedy led Margaret to be hesitant to leave Hong Kong
Expats episode 2 offered a window into Margaret’s opinion about returning home before Gus’s disappearance, which saw her at odds with the Margaret in Expats episode 2. Margaret’s reaction to the news of staying another year in Hong Kong showed her full opposition to the idea, highlighting how her career had already suffered in the past because she followed Clarke to Hong Kong. Still, she refused to leave one year later, stubbornly telling everybody that Hong Kong was Daisy and Philip’s home. Expats will undoubtedly reveal what changed Margaret’s heart, but Gus’s disappearance in Hong Kong probably impacts Margaret’s wishes.
Margaret's Career Sacrifices For Her Family Mattered Greatly In The Past
Her focus is completely shifted in the present, though
Expats showed Margaret taking pride in her career, despite not working in Hong Kong. Still, Expats episode 2 showed Margaret happy about their upcoming return to the US because she could set her company back up, to the point of being angry at Clarke for asking them to stay another year. While Margaret still defended her career with Priscilla, not wanting to be mistaken for a housewife like many among the American expats in Hong Kong, she wasn’t planning to continue with her job in practice, as Expats portrayed Margaret as stuck in a decision-making limbo.
New episodes of Expats are released every Friday on Amazon Prime Video.
