The following may contain graphic images or videos that may be disturbing for some readers.

Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story (AHS) is one of the most recognizable horror shows running. Season One, AHS: Murder House, aired on FX on October 5, 2011. Since then, a new AHS season has dropped yearly (with a few exceptions, like the height of the COVID-19 pandemic slowing down production). The franchise has expanded to include spin-off series like Hulu's American Horror Stories. Like the parent show, American Horror Stories is an anthology series, but it tells a new story every episode.

Currently, AHS is in its 12th season, Delicate. Unfortunately, after the first five episodes, the series went on hiatus due to the writer's strike. The reception to the season has been mixed, but it's got plenty of potential to end with a bang. Most fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the series and filling the gap by revisiting older seasons. AHS has a reputation for dropping the ball, but it's also created some of the most iconic moments in horror television.

10 Smoldering Children is an Incredibly Intense Story

Violet finds her dead body hidden inside the Murder House
  • "Smoldering Children" is the 10th episode of Season One, Murder House
  • It aired on December 7, 2011
  • IMDb rates "Smoldering Children" an 8.4 out of 10

"Smoldering Children" is one of the most intense episodes of AHS: Murder House, which says a lot about its credibility. Many fans claim that it's one of the best seasons of AHS. Murder House created the mold for the rest of the series' success, so fans tend to look back on it with rose-tinted glasses. "Smoldering Children" contains the biggest plot twist of the season. It explores Tate's backstory and helps piece together what led him to commit the school shooting.

The most shocking part of this episode is the reveal that Violet is dead. Violet, Ben and Vivien's daughter, has been struggling with thoughts of self-harm and suicide. In the episode "Piggy Piggy", Violet attempts to take her own life. The show leads the audience to believe that Violet survived, but she didn't. Tate takes her to see her rotting corpse. Forced to confront the reality that she's dead, Violet finally understands Murder House's curse. Anything that dies there can never move on.

American Horror Story: Every Season, Ranked
American Horror Story's anthology format changed the game for horror television, and each season brings something new to the table.
  • "Gaslight" is the 5th episode of Season Ten, Double Feature
  • It aired on September 15, 2021
  • IMDb rates "Gaslight" an 8.4 out of 10

Double Feature and Season 6, Roanoke, are two of the most controversial AHS seasons. That's because both of them are infamously horrible and roastable. Oddly enough, they both suffered from the same fate. Each had a strong start that got fans hooked, but halfway through them, they flat-lined. Considering Double Feature is easily one of the worst-rated AHS seasons, it's shocking that one of its episodes made it into the Top 10.

The first half of Double Feature is arguably a much better story than the second half. The first six episodes focus on a drug that turns talented people into vampire-like creatures. With the help of the drug, they can turn out creative work at record speeds. If talent-less people take the drug, they become "pale people", bloodthirsty shells that are no longer sentient. "Gaslight" is the major turning point of this plot. Doris' husband and young daughter have both taken the drug, transforming them into bloodthirsty masters of their craft. Alma, Doris' daughter, convinces her to take the pill too, insisting she's talented enough to survive. Doris, however, starts morphing into a pale person instead. Alma lied to Doris because she wanted to get rid of her and it worked.

8 Unholy Night Was a Dark Twist on Santa

  • "Unholy Night" is the 8th episode of Season Two, Asylum
  • It aired on December 5, 2012
  • IMDb rated "Unholy Night" an 8.5 out of 10

"Unholy Night" is a Christmas-themed episode of AHS: Asylum. Asylum is known for upping the ante after Murder House's initial success. Asylum is one of the best seasons of AHS, but it also has some of the wildest plot points that still have fans scratching their heads. "Unholy Night" focuses on a killer and Briarcliff inmate dressing up as Santa Claus. Sister Mary Eunice takes a Santa outfit to Leigh Emerson, a man who was sent to Briarcliff after dressing up as Santa and going on a killing spree.

Mary Eunice receives praise for giving Leigh a "chance at redemption", but in reality, Leigh is only loyal to Mary Eunice. He attempts to kill Frank for her. He fails to do so, but Mary Eunice carries out the deed anyway, unafraid of being discovered. Leigh also attacks Sister Jude to get revenge on her for her cruelty. All the while, Lana and Kit are trying to prove who the real Bloody Face killer is.

The whispering of his second face eventually drove him insane, and he was locked away in an asylum. Edward escaped and joined a freak show troupe.

On Halloween, his second face convinced him to kill the entire troupe and then himself. This developed into a Carnie superstition that performing on Halloween risks summoning Edward's spirit. Edward's second face whispers his desire for Edward to take a new Carnie life, putting all the performers at risk. "Edward Mordrake: Part 2" focuses on Edward's presence at the freak show. 6 Could It Be… Satan? Was an Ambitious Episode

Michael Langdon saves Queenie and Madison
  • "Could It Be… Satan?" is the 4th episode of Season Eight, Apocalypse
  • It aired on October 3, 2018
  • IMDb rates "Could It Be… Satan?" an 8.7 out of 10

AHS: Apocalypse was one of the most ambitious seasons of American Horror Story because it brought back the entire cast of Season Three, Coven. Apocalypse connected multiple seasons, like Coven and Murder House, but it also acted as a sequel to Coven. In this season, Cordiela and her coven take on the oncoming apocalypse and face off against the devil's son, Michael Langdon. In "Could It Be… Satan?", the warlocks from Hawthorne School for Exceptional Young Men challenge Cordiela's spot as Supreme.

According to AHS lore, the Supreme has always been a woman because women are more magically gifted than men. Over the years, warlocks have grown resentful of this fact, so when Michael falls into their lap, they finally believe they've found their "Alpha", a warlock that will surpass all female Supremes. In this episode, Cordelia puts Michael through the Seven Wonders challenge. She has no intention of making him the next Supreme, but she is testing his power and tricking him into bringing back two of her dead girls, Queenie and Madison.

  • "Orphans" is the 10th episode of Season Four, Freak Show
  • It aired on December 17, 2014
  • IMDb rates "Orphans" an 8.7 out of 10

"Orphans" is one of those episodes that connects American Horror Story seasons. Although every season tells a different story, it's canon that each story happens in the same universe. In "Orphans", Freak Show connects to Season Two: Asylum when Lily Rabe's Sister Mary Eunice makes an appearance. Elsa, the troupe's founder and leader, talks about how she created her troupe because she wanted her performers to be treated better than other freak shows. She admits that she found Pepper at an orphanage and took her in.

This episode explains how Pepper ended up at Asylum's Briarcliff Asylum. After Elsa convinces Pepper's sister, Rita, to take Pepper in, Rita frames Pepper for the murder of her deformed baby. This results in Pepper being sent to Briarcliff. Sister Mary Eunice admits Pepper and then has Pepper join her in some library work. While working, Pepper finds a magazine with Elsa on the cover. Fans loved how intricate this episode was in connecting multiple seasons.

4 Madness Ends Finishes a Season With Gusto

Lana Winters speaks with an interviewer about her book
  • "Madness Ends" is the 13th episode and season finale of Season Two, Asylum
  • It aired on January 23, 2013
  • IMDb rates "Madness Ends" an 8.7 out of 10

"Madness Ends" is Asylum's final episode, and it ends with a bang. This episode starts with Johnny Morgan, a character who's never been seen before, exploring the boarded-up Briarcliff Asylum while listening to Lana's audiobook, Tales from Briarcliff. The episode reveals that after Lana escaped Briarcliff, she became a television investigative reporter who played a massive role in getting Briarcliff shut down. She's also been open about what Oliver Thredson (Bloody Face) did to her.

During an interview where she refuses to talk about Oliver, Lana asks for a glass of water. Johnny delivers the water to her, so the interview can continue. During the interview, she confesses that the baby she had as a result of Oliver's assault didn't die. Lana didn't keep in contact with her son, but he was alive. Johnny confronts Lana afterward and confesses that he knows she is his mother. Johnny has followed in his father's footsteps and seeks revenge on Lana. Lana convinces him it's not his fault and manages to take the gun from him. Unfortunately, Johnny has become a monster, so Lana turns the gun on him and kills him.

  • "I Am Anne Frank: Part 2" is the 5th episode of Season Two, Asylum
  • It aired on November 14, 2012
  • IMDb rates "I Am Anne Frank: Part 2" an 8.8 out of 10

"I Am Anne Frank: Part 2" is the second and final part of the "I Am Anne Frank" episodes. In Part 1, a woman is admitted to Briarcliff, claiming to be Anne Frank. After being admitted, she attacks Dr. Arden because she believes him to be too much like Auschwitz concentration camp doctor, Hans GrĂ¼per. After severely injuring Dr. Arden, "Anne", finds Shelley trapped in his lab. Shelley begs "Anne" to kill her. In "I Am Anne Frank: Part 2", a man arrives at Briarcliff claiming to be "Anne's" husband. He reveals that her real name is Charlotte.

Jim Brown, Charlotte's husband, tells them that Charlotte's become obsessed with Anne's story, so she adopts Anne's identity. Jim takes Charlotte home, but later returns her to Briarcliff after she attempted to kill their baby. Dr. Arden suggests they lobotomize Charlotte. Later in the episode, when Charlotte has been taken home, the audience sees some evidence that Charlotte might have been Anne after all. She has a photo of Hans GrĂ¼per standing behind Hitler. While all this is going on, Oliver Thredson manages to kidnap Lana and trap her in his home.

2 The Name Game is One of AHS' Most Memorable

  • "The Name Game" is the 10th episode of Season Two, Asylum
  • It aired on January 2, 2013
  • IMDb rates "The Name Game" an 8.9 out of 10
  • "The Name Game" puts four episodes from Season Two in the Top 10, more than any other season

"The Name Game" might be one of the most memorable episodes in AHS thanks to the catchy song performed by Jessica Lang's Sister Jude. This episode explores the inhumane treatment that happens at Briarcliff. Instead of the victim being a typical inmate, though, it's Sister Jude. Sister Jude is an important figure throughout Asylum. At the beginning of the season, she's seen as a figurehead of the asylum, but eventually, she becomes an inmate and is driven to her breaking point, just like most of the inmates wrongfully housed at Briarcliff.

After rebelling against Sister Mary Eunice, she's taken to Dr. Arden for electroconvulsive therapy. Arden allows Mary Eunice to control the machine, where she cracks it up higher than any human should be exposed to. This severely limits Jude's ability to do anything. This episode thoroughly explores how evil Mary Eunice is, but it also leads to Jude trying to help Lana get out of the asylum.

1 Return to Murder House is The Best AHS Can Offer Fans

  • "Return to Murder House" is the 6th episode of Season Eight, Apocalypse
  • It aired on October 17, 2018
  • IMDb rates "Return to Murder House" a 9.2 out of 10, making it AHS' best episode

"Return to Murder House" features Coven's Madison going to explore Murder House to get more information about Michael Langdon. By this point in the season, the witches are convinced that there is something seriously wrong with Michael. He can't be allowed to become the next Supreme because he's pure evil. Most of the warlocks write this off as the witches being unwilling to accept a male successor, but a few of the warlocks have grown suspicious of Michael as well. Madison is joined by Behold, one of the warlocks who advocated for Michael's rise to power.

As the pair explore Murder House, they learn that Michael Langdon was the result of Tate assaulting Vivien in the rubber suit back in Season One. Every ghost that willingly talks to them about Tate describes that there has always been something wrong with him. No matter how much love or acceptance they showed him, he always did the worst thing possible. Michael killed animals as a child but quickly upgraded to murdering babysitters and priests. He also grew from a young boy to a man in a single night. This episode seamlessly blends the lore of Murder House, Coven, and Apocalypse, connecting all three seasons flawlessly. Fans loved returning to Murder House and reuniting with some of their old favorite characters.
