LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14) — The Las Cruces City Manager, Ifo Pili, appointed Jeremy Story as the Chief of the Las Cruces Police Department.
Story has served as the interim police chief for the department since July.

KFOX14 sat down with Story to learn more about his priorities and vision for the city.
His priorities include crime reduction, community engagement and better training.
His biggest priority is being more open with the community.
"We haven't done a great job of sharing that information with you guys, with the public," Story said. "Doing the town halls doing bridging the badge, our Zoom meetings, having more conversations with you guys and being more open with the media."
On top of the communication, Story said he is hopeful to combat crime in the city with additional resources.
"We want to make sure we're targeting the places where it's occurring the most," Story said.
He said he wants to take a different approach to those who are constantly committing misdemeanor crimes.
"Let's try something different. Plug them into services, see if we can get stop that cycle," Story said.
KFOX14 asked Story what the department could improve in.
He said the biggest thing, is knowing the law better, which could help officers make better decisions out in the field.
"Officers have to know the law as well if not better than an attorney because they have to apply it in real time. Sometimes in seconds or minutes,” Story said.
The department has already begun to work on that issue, according to Story.
"We brought on a police legal adviser who's a trainer and attorney who is really good at teaching officers a law," Story said.
Story's official start date is Sunday.
