Even moms lean on their moms once in a while.

Erie resident Amelia Hollingsworth shone a spotlight on the power of that maternal support system in “The “One Thing We Didn’t Have to Unpack,” her story featured in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Magic of Moms.” The latest installment of the long-running, uplifting books was released in March and celebrates “all the magical mothers in our lives,” according to a news release.

Hollingsworth has lived in Erie since 2018 with her two children and husband, but before living in Colorado her family moved from Mississippi to California, which inspired her story.

“The story is about my struggle to downsize from our move from Mississippi to California,” Hollingsworth said. “And I called my mom and I said, ‘Mom, I’m having a hard time because there are all these memories that are connected with my stuff.’ She gave me a life lesson. The memories are always there. It’s OK to let go, especially when it’s for something as important as the move that we were making, which was to be closer to family for a season when our kids were really little.”

She added in the context of Mother’s Day, the story is a good one because she said moms are willing to drop everything they’re doing and help you when you’re going through something hard, or not so hard, but frustrating.

“The One Thing We Didn’t Have to Unpack” was originally published in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Joy of Less,” Hollingsworth said.

“The story is about simplifying stuff, but it really prominently featured my mom, and our relationship,” she said.

She’s pleased the work is being featured in the tribute to mothers.

“It was a welcome and wonderful surprise,” Hollingsworth said.

As a mother , she said she was excited to hear about “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Magic of Moms.”

“I think it’s nice that it’s featured in there, because it showcases how meaningful the relationship is with the mom, even if it’s long distance,” Hollingsworth said. “It’s an irreplaceable relationship. I think that this anthology, ‘The Magic of Moms,’ is so sweet and … it’s so nice to share what it’s not about me as a mommy, it’s about how much I love my mom.”

This will be the third time one of her submissions has appeared in a Chicken Soup for the Soul book.

Her first story, “The Unexpected Roommate”  appeared in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Preteens” in 2011.

“When I lived in Mississippi, it was a wonderful friend of mine (that encouraged me),” Hollingsworth said. “She was a writer and she had had a book published traditionally. I told her, ‘Hey, if you ever want someone to pay to read your work I would be thrilled and delighted.’”

From there, she said she was looped into her friend’s newsletters and saw that Chicken Soup for the Soul was collecting submissions.

From there, she submitted “The Unexpected Roommate” and then five years later, in 2016, she submitted “The One Thing We Didn’t Have to Unpack.”

“I have always been a writer,” Hollingsworth said. “I remember writing a story in fourth grade for all of my friends to read. I was thinking that it was just so much fun to have people react or enjoy the stories that I make up.”

In a statement, Editor-in-Chief for “Chicken Soup for the Soul” Amy Newmark said,Hollingsworth’s is just one story that highlights the enduring strength of mother-child relationships.

“Mothers are constantly surprising their children with their super powers, and the way they are not only incredibly strong but at the same time gentle, forgiving, creative, clever, and wise,” Newmark said in a statement.

The book is being used a fundraiser as well as celebrating moms. The contributors who wrote in the book will select four nonprofits to support with the royalties from the book, according to the news release.

Shelby Janner, a publicist with Zilker Media, via email said the selected nonprofits have not yet been notified.

“We haven’t told the good news to the nonprofits yet because we are waiting to tell them when we know how much we’ll be sending them. We can tell you that one of them is involved in animal welfare, two are involved in helping mothers and children, and one is a jump starter that helps people with things like buying that last tank of gas they need for their first week at a new job,” she said.
