If you tried to order tacos and margaritas yesterday for Cinco de Mayo yesterday it’s highly possible you were disappointed. One day after Chicago restaurant owners urged customers to order from them directly due to the exorbitant fees charged by third party delivery apps it seemed like every Mexican restaurant and delivery service struggled to keep up with demand on a rainy Chicago night. I tried calling El Mariachi Tequila Bar and Grill about 15 times and the line was constantly busy. I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but I punted on my dream of Mexican food on Cinco de Mayo around 8:00 pm and ordered Asian food instead.

And then I started seeing complaints about Grubhub and Door Dash all over Twitter. Here’s a screenshot I took around 10 p.m. while I was eating my shumai:

I put out a call on Twitter and immediately heard from my friend Amit Bindra who said that his Grubhub order was cancelled after three hours and that his driver indicated there was a 40 car wait at one point in time. It definitely wasn’t just Amit, either.

I mean, honestly just take a look at some of these tweets:

It didn’t appear to be isolated to any particular metro area, either. The tweets poured in from Chicago, New York and California. After 50 plus days of slow nights and carry out orders Mexican restaurants and delivery services didn’t have anywhere near the capacity to meet consumers demand to #CincoDeMayoAtHome. While thousands were angry, at least some customers took the whole night in stride:
