Video Diary: This Is What Getting Vaccinated Looks Like - Spectrum News NY1

As New York City continues to battle what some experts call its third wave of the COVID-19 surge, the threat of more contagious variants complicates that work. With the city’s positivity rate hovering above 6 percent for weeks now, state officials have been rapidly expanding eligibility requirements for the vaccine in an effort to stem the tide.

This week, adults over 30 years old are now eligible to receive the vaccine. All other adults can be vaccinated starting April 6, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. This timeline puts the state ahead of President Biden’s requirement that eligibility expands to every adult in the U.S. by May 1.

The huge influx of people who will now be eligible could test the city and state’s health system, which has proven tricky to navigate thus far. There have been complaints about the multiple registration portals, as well as the availability of appointments.

Our reporter, Anna Lucente Sterling, joined the state’s group of eligible residents with certain pre-existing conditions that pose an increased risk of moderate or severe illness or death from the virus back in February. Her video diary of the journey to get fully vaccinated over the course of the following month—from preparing eligibility proof to the side effects after receiving the doses—is one example of what the experience might look like for the huge swath of newly eligible people in New York.
