Colorado Rockies: This Trevor Story home run had a little bit of everything - Rox Pile

For a few innings on Wednesday afternoon, it was a good old-fashioned “Coors Field” type of game between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres. Plenty of scoring included plenty of home runs, including one for the record books from Trevor Story.

Here’s why Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story’s home run was a milestone to remember.

In the bottom of the fifth inning during Colorado’s sweep-clinching 7-5 win over the Padres, Story turned on a 3-1 pitch from San Diego reliever Nabil Crismatt and sent the 433 feet with an exit velocity of 111 mph.

Sure, the home run was majestic on a warm August day in downtown Denver, but there’s more to it.

First, it was the 150th career homer for Story, someone who burst onto the Major League scene in 2016 with a historic home run tear. The milestone home run came in Story’s 709th career game, making him the seventh-fastest to reach 150 home runs in MLB history. By the way, Albert Pujols leads the list at 586 games. Mike Trout comes in just ahead of Story at 701 games.

Second, take a look at where the home run landed. The Rockies partner with UCHealth on a charity incentive any time a Rockies player “hits the mitt” with a home run. Story became the first player to accomplish the feat this season, resulting in a $5,000 donation from UCHealth to the Colorado Rockies Foundation for Feeding Colorado which, according to the Rockies, is “an association of five food banks in Colorado serving all 64 counties and nourishing Coloradoans through direct service programs and their network of more than 1,300 hunger relief partners.”

Third, did you happen to check out that bat flip from Story? He’s already had some statement flips this season, including the one below from April when his grand slam pushed the Rockies to a home win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fourth, the blast was part of an August where Story has found himself in a big way at the plate. He entered August after a dismal July where trade rumors swirled around him and he slashed just .188/.260/.388 with an OPS of .649. As the calendar turned, however, so did Story’s heat level at the dish. In 16 games this month, Story’s slash line reads .352/.444/.667 with an eye-popping 1.111 OPS.

Sure, it was one swing of the bat that was a big part of the victory. But there were plenty of stories within that one swing that are worth telling and reliving.
