The Rockies continue to confound.
After taking two of three games against the high-flying Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend, they messed up in Texas.
Despite two home runs from Irving, Texas, native Trevor Story, Colorado lost 4-3 to the lowly Rangers on Monday night at Globe Life Field. The Rangers own a 46-85 record.
Texas right-hander A.J. Alexy, making his big-league debut, pitched five scoreless innings and limited the Rockies to a single hit — a leadoff double by C.J. Cron in the second. Alexy had a bunch of three-ball counts but the Rockies never solved him. He struck out four and walked three.
Manager Bud Black often says pitchers usually have the advantage when the opposing team sees them for the first time, but Story said the Rockies should have had better at-bats.
“The game has to be played and it’s played on the field,” said Story, who struck out twice in his two at-bats against Alexy. “But he executed some good pitches, kept us off-balance and we really couldn’t get anything going off him.”
Meanwhile, Colorado right-hander German Marquez continued his August swoon. He gave up four runs on seven hits — including three home runs — over six innings.
“I’ve been missing my locations … I’ve been missing a lot of pitches,” Marquez said. “I feel a little rushed and a little quick with my delivery.”
Marquez’s troubles began in the fourth inning when D.J. Peters launched a two-out solo homer to left. Marquez’s troubles deepened in the fifth when No. 9 hitter Loedy Taveras — the owner of an .062 batting average and no home runs entering the night — blasted a two-out solo homer to dead center. Not an easy feat at Globe Life Field.
The Rangers ripped Marquez for three hits in the sixth, including a two-run homer to right by Nick Solak. Over his last four starts, Marquez is 1-3 with an 8.85 ERA that includes seven homers. It’s quite an about-face for Marquez, who went 6-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 11 starts in June and July.
“For me, his stuff is fine,” Black said. “The mistake is coming back to bite him. Replaying the last few games and replaying every single pitch, like we do, there have just been too many mistakes.”
Story, who had about 40 friends and family in attendance, led off the seventh with a second-deck blast to left field off Josh Sborz. Story’s bat flip was instant and flamboyant.
“I really don’t think about my bat flips, or have anything preconceived or planned out ahead of time,” he said. “It was very instinctual, I guess.”
Story cut the Rangers’ lead to 4-3 in the eighth with a two-run shot to right-center off Spencer Patton. Story drove in Connor Joe, who led off with a single. Story, who had the 18th multi-homer game of his career, had been in an 0-for-22 slump before he laced a double against the Dodgers on Sunday. The free-agent-to-be now has 18 homers this season.
“The only thing I’m focusing on is that I want to finish this (season) off the right way,” he said. “It’s important to me because I know the type of player I can be on a consistent basis.
“It’s been a long season and we haven’t won as many games, and I haven’t played as well as I would like, but it’s important for me to finish strong.”
On Deck
Rockies LHP Austin Gomber (9-8, 4.38 ERA) at Rangers RHP Jordan Lyles (6-11, 5.70)
6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Globe Life Park

Gomber needs to break free of his slump. The lefty is 0-2 with an 8.56 ERA over his last three starts, including an uncharacteristic seven walks. He suffered his eighth loss of the season last Wednesday in Game 1 of a doubleheader vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field. In 4 2/3 innings, he allowed five runs on seven hits, including three home runs. Gomber dominated the Rangers at Coors Field on June 3, pitching six scoreless, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out six. Gomber is 4-7 with a 6.08 ERA on the road. Lyles, the journeyman starter and former Rockie, is coming off a rough start. The Indians blasted Lyles for eight runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander currently leads the American League in both runs and hits allowed. He’s already served up a career-high 33 home runs.
