President Bill Clinton’s affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, which nearly tanked his presidency and forever changed her life, began with a sly smile. At least that’s how it’s depicted in the first trailer for Impeachment: American Crime Story, the third season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series on FX.
“As you no doubt heard, you get to work in the West Wing as of this morning. You’re gonna be working right beside the people who run the world,” a White House adviser tells the class of incoming interns via voice-over. “Please, be professional.” Cut to Beanie Feldstein’s Lewinsky and Clive Owen’s Clinton sharing a look as he passes the group. There to capture it all—and share it with the world—is Linda Tripp (played by Sarah Paulson), a Pentagon employee who gets close with Lewinsky only to betray her trust.
“There is a woman I’m very close to in the midst of an affair with the president of the United States,” Tripp reveals. It’s not long before she’s recording private conversations with Lewinsky for public consumption. In the midst of this deceit, viewers are treated to first looks of Edie Falco’s Hillary Clinton, Billy Eichner’s Matt Drudge, Annaleigh Ashford’s Paula Jones, and Cobie Smulders’s Ann Coulter. (Betty Gilpin, who was originally cast as Coulter, reportedly dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.)
The rest of Impeachment’s cast is filled out with Taran Killam as Steve Jones, Margo Martindale as Lucianne Goldberg, Anthony Green as former vice president Al Gore, and Colin Hanks in an undisclosed role. When Feldstein shared a first look of herself as Lewinsky on Instagram, she tagged Mira Sorvino, Elizabeth Reaser, and Judith Light—implying their involvement in the series.
The show is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s 1999 book, A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, and Lewinsky (who is also a V.F. contributor) serves as an executive producer. Just as Murphy and company recreated headline-making moments from the O.J. Simpson trial and Gianni Versace murder in previous seasons, Impeachment promises to follow suit. At the end of the trailer, Owen utters the infamous Clinton line from his 1998 trial: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”
