Javier Báez gives Tigers’ rebuild a big boost
The Tigers took a huge step forward in their rebuild by reaching an agreement with shortstop Javier Báez on a six-year, $140 million deal. Báez, 28, posted a 4.5 WAR (Baseball-Reference) and a 117 OPS+ last season. He’s an elite defensive player with range to both sides and a strong arm. His tagging ability is the best in the business. He hit 31 home runs last season but had an on-base percentage of just .319 along with a league-leading 184 strikeouts, and that sums up the type of player he is. Báez has reached his ceiling, which was good enough to make two All-Star teams (2018, 2019) and win a Gold Glove Award (2020). He consistently brings high energy and enthusiasm to the ballpark, but his tremendous passion sometimes gets in the way and makes him streaky. However, I love this signing because Báez will fit nicely in the Tigers’ lineup long term after the arrival of their two top prospects, first baseman/third baseman Spencer Torkelson and right fielder
