A workshop slated to kick off the 2022 Mountain Story Festival tonight has been postponed, but only for a week, and four other presentations in the annual Teton County Library series are still on the schedule to run through March 2.

Jackson Hole writer Brigid Mander, who was lined up to present tonight, will instead lead her community writing workshop, “The Breakdown of a Good Adventure Tale and How to Find Your Own Voice,” at 6 p.m. Jan. 20 in the library’s Ordway Auditorium.

Mountain Story started in 2013 with a slate featuring Jim Whittaker speaking on the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest. Oona Doherty, adult program coordinator at the time, created the festival as a way to combine literature and adventure.

“We keep an eye out all year for potential Mountain Story presenters,” said the library’s adult programs coordinator, Leah Shlachter. “What’s being published, what’s happening in the outdoor recreation and conservation worlds, what new art is out there.”

In addition to Mander, 2022 brings Doug Peacock, Rick Ridgeway, Katie Ives and David Gonzales to the Mountain Story stage — in person or virtual.

Peacock will present “Was It Worth It? A Wilderness Warrior’s Long Trail Home” online at 6 p.m. Jan. 25. “An Evening of Stories with Rick Ridgeway” is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 10 online, and Ives will present “Mountains of the Imagination” at 6 p.m. Feb. 16, also online.

At 7 p.m. March 2 at the Pink Garter Theater, Gonzales will take the stage for “The Picnic: Why the F Not?”

No registration is required to attend online or in person. Find links at TCLib.org.

Mander, the Jan. 20 workshop leader, is a skier, adventurer and writer who turned dedicated ski bumming into a full-time writing career. She contributes regularly to publications including Backcountry Magazine, Mountain Outlaw and The Wall Street Journal.

“I’ve followed Brigid’s work over the years in various publications,” Shlachter said, “and I think she brings a unique voice and perspective in outdoor narrative writing.”

Mander said that she will share her experience of trying to break into writing, figuring out how to turn it into a career and the various ways that can be done.

“Then I’ll go over the construction of storytelling, how to develop your own voice, avoid the play-by-play, and create something unique and entertaining and/or educating for the reader,” she said.

Mander said she’s looking forward to meeting other writers at the workshop and hearing what they have to say.
