Exactly why Leota Adebayo plants the diary in Peacemaker's house is one of many unanswered questions from the hit Peacemaker series. In episode 5 of the HBO Max series, she plants the diary during a moment of bonding with Peacemaker while the latter goes to the bathroom. While the exact purpose for the diary hasn't been specified, it's all a part of Amanda Waller's secret plan, and it could spell certain doom for the lead anti-hero.

Peacemaker follows John Cena's character as he is sent on a mission with an ARGUS task force known as "Project Butterfly." Their mission is to eradicate the Butterflies, creatures that have taken human hosts and are spreading rapidly across the United States. Among the members of Project Butterfly are Peacemaker's Leota Adebayo, who is eventually revealed to be the daughter of Amanda Waller. In addition, it's become apparent that she's being looped in on a secret agenda of Waller's that is unknown to the rest of the team. Part of this plan, as previously mentioned, involves planting a diary inside Peacemaker's home, made to look like it belongs to him.

While it's still unconfirmed at this point in the Peacemaker show, the diary could be used as a form of framing the anti-hero. After all, Amanda Waller clearly has no problem throwing operatives under the bus should it suit her main agenda, as The Suicide Squad's opening beach massacre proves. To that end, it seems apparent that whatever her plan is, it likely includes setting up Peacemaker (and possibly the rest of Project Butterfly with the probable exception of Leota) as a scapegoat for some of the team's actions across the series.

Project Butterfly's main agenda in Peacemaker is to annihilate the creatures in order to prevent a full-scale invasion. That being said, it's off the record because it requires them to kill a lot of people, including some with high authority. Case in point, a U.S. senator and his family are possessed by the Butterflies, which leads to them being assassinated. Given how that will look at face value, it would make sense that Waller wants to ensure this doesn't tie back to her or her superiors, much like she tried to do in The Suicide Squad with Project Starfish. With that in mind, the diary likely contains incriminating evidence that implicates Peacemaker for the killings, with his status as a convicted murderer making this far more plausible. As for the rest of Project Butterfly, the same can be applied to Vigilante while Harcourt, Economos, and Murn become collateral damage (with Waller no doubt using this as revenge against the former two for betraying her in The Suicide Squad.)

Ultimately, Waller's plan in Peacemaker will no doubt run into a few obstacles. For starters, Leota has a stronger moral compass than her mother, which means she will likely feel enough guilt to come clean before the end of the season. Even more pressing, however, is the fact that Murn is a Butterfly and has attacked Leota at the end of episode 5. Episode 6 will likely show how much this affects Waller's plans, but it's for sure that James Gunn is setting the stage for several major conflicts as the season comes to a close.
