Amazon Prime brought Middle Earth back to the forefront with its popular television series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Set during the second age of Middle Earth, the first season was spent establishing the series' foundation for future seasons. With season two greenlit, there are several significant events to tackle.
While Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have firmly taken their place in the pop culture zeitgeist, there are several of his stories that haven't been explored. The Rings of Power should follow in its predecessor's footsteps and bring certain popular Tolkien stories to a new media for fans to enjoy.
8 Numenor's Downfall
This part of Middle-Earth's history was clearly set up in Season One of The Rings of Power. According to Tolkien's writings, Númenor is destroyed by a wave, and Queen Miriel foresaw that fate in Season One. The question now is: when will viewers see it happen on screen?
Now that Halbrand is done deceiving Galadriel, Sauron will likely set his sights on the people of the island, especially since it was established in Season One how much he loved it. Númenor's downfall is guaranteed, and the show's creators should tackle it sooner rather than later.
7 Pharazon's Rise To Power
Pharazôn is destined to be the last king of Númenor before its eventual fall. He has already been introduced in the first season of the series, although he appears to be a kindly and charismatic person. Eventually, though, he will have to turn the people against Queen Míriel.
Míriel's unpopular decision to help Galadriel in Season One may have already set the wheels in motion, and Pharazôn is likely to make his move in the show's second season. Plus, the groundwork has already been laid for a visit from Sauron that could easily tip the scales in Pharazôn's favor.
6 The Balrog Of Khazad-Dum
In the coming years of Middle-Earth's history Dwarves will mine Minthril which will lead to new challenges for the inhabitants in Middle Earth. The Lord of the Rings fans will already be familiar with the Balrog due to his appearance in the mines of Moria and the sacrifice of Gandalf the Grey.
But, the original trilogy revealed to viewers the Balrog had already killed Dwarves well before the Fellowship made its way to Moria. Season One of The Rings of Power already foreshadowed the Balrog's decimation of the Dwarves when it awoke in the first season. It's certain to make an interesting villain going forward.
5 Revelation Of Sauron
At the end of Season One, Galadriel learned that Halbrand was actually the evil Sauron, and had tricked Celebrimbor and Elrond into doing his bidding and deceived several others into creating Mordor. Still, Galadriel didn't reveal this treachery to anyone else, as she became enamored with the Ring of Power that she bears.
In Season Two, more of Sauron's treachery needs to be revealed. Fans know that Sauron will be a major foe all the way until the One Ring is destroyed, but characters other than Galadriel need to know about him before any can act against him.
4 The Sack of Eregion
Sauron is destined to wage war against the Elves. This is expected to include an attack on the Elvish city of Eregion. This becomes important in the grand scheme of his war. Eregion is destroyed by the time The Lord of the Rings takes place, but new Elvish cities have been created.
The show's creators have promised that a massive battle will be shown across two episodes of season two. While there's no guarantee the sacking of Eregion will be that battle, it would make sense if it were, as it's an important part of Tolkien's writings that hasn't been shown on screen yet.
3 The Arrival Of The Blue Wizards
In Tolkien's works, five wizards arrived in Middle Earth at different times during his writings. Fans have already seen Gandalf and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as Gandalf and Radagast in The Hobbit trilogy. But the blue wizards, who were identified as the first to arrive in Middle Earth, have not yet appeared on the big or small screens.
The Blue Wizards helped fight in the initial war against Sauron, and the first season hinted at a mysterious stranger preparing to help. While the series has hinted at that mysterious stranger being Gandalf, there are still other missions, like the suggested adventure in Rhûn that could set up the arrival of at least one blue wizard.
2 The Founding Of Rivendell
Rivendell is one of the most important locations in Middle Earth, especially during the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Elron founds Rivendell following the sacking of Eregion. Sauron will destroy the Elven city, forcing Elrond to found a new city for the refugees.
While Elrond appears in Season One, he's far from the leader shown in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The founding of Rivendell is likely to be a key moment in his character development in The Rings of Power. Season Two seems like as good a place to start as any.
1 The Forging Of The One Ring (And Other Rings)
At the end of the first season, the three rings for the Elves had been forged, but there was no sign of the rings for Men, Dwarves, or the One Ring to Rule Them All. The One Ring will be forged in the fires of Mount Doom, and Sauron is already placed in Mordor for the beginning of Season Two.
It will be interesting to see when the rings to Men and Dwarves will be distributed as well. It's almost certain that they will be forged soon, so Season Two would do well to cover the forging and distribution of the rings.
