Vigil series 2 spoilers follow.

Suranne Jones returns for an all-new investigation in the first look at Vigil's second series.

The BBC has today (September 15) unveiled first-look photos showing Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie returning as Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva and Detective Sergeant Kirsten Longacre for a startling new case.

Having previously unravelled a murder mystery aboard a ballistic missile submarine, the detectives must now look to the skies to solve their latest case.

The duo are once again on the trail of a killer, this time after there are multiple suspicious deaths at the site of a weapons test in Scotland.

Amy and Kirsten's investigation takes them from the Highlands to the Middle East, as they infiltrate the ranks of the air force to discover who's really behind this string of suspicious killings.

Joining Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie for this second series of Vigil will be fellow returning cast member Gary Lewis, reprising his role as Detective Superintendent Colin Robertson.

An impressive crop of newcomers for these six episodes includes Becoming Elizabeth's Romola Garai, Dougray Scott (Batwoman), SAS Rogue Heroes' Amir El-Masry and Sex Education star Chris Jenks, among others. Series creator Tom Edge returns for these episodes, which have been filmed in Scotland and Morocco.

Earlier this year, Suranne Jones spoke about one of the biggest changes for the second series of Vigil — there are absolutely no submarines involved.

"There's no submarines, which I'm thrilled about because that was hardcore and it was in the middle of COVID," she told The One Show. "It's all in the skies, that was under the water and now we're looking up to the skies."
