Almost two months into social distancing with at least another month to go before Illinois’ stay-at-home order ends the days are all running together in ways I never imagined possible. I mean, sure, I’ve had times on vacation or between jobs when I wasn’t sure if it was Wednesday or Thursday. However, I’ve never had a period like that for so long, and even in those periods there were other things that kept me aware of the days. You know, things like Cubs baseball games that gave me a clue it was Friday due to the start time or opponent.
The only thing that differentiates the days right now is the weather.
It’s been so mind numbing that on the latest episode of Cuppa Cubbie Blue I kept referring to the day we were recording as Monday when it was definitely Tuesday. Luckily Andi Cruz Vanecek is a champion and didn’t correct me, but it’s just another sign of the times.
Any hint of a positive change in direction is enough to make me practically jump for joy these days. We still live in a pandemic, but it’s sunny outside is like a perfect day right now. So please forgive me for my overreaction to seeing that the Starbucks by Wrigley Field is open again. Don’t worry, I’ll still be supporting Dark Matter and the Two Hearted Queen frequently, but something about being able to start my day with a walk of about a mile and a cup of dark roast again just honestly filled me with relief on a day where I was struggling.

It’s not normal yet. It’s going to be a long time before it is, but getting small pieces of normalcy back breaks up the monotony in important ways.
