WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Diary of our Days at the Breakwater, Season 1, Episode 8, "Freshwater Prawns," now streaming on Funimation.

The Umino High Breakwater Club has been locked away behind the walls of education for the past few weeks due to the weather and the girls are starting to snap. Club President Yūki has a trick up her sleeve to dissuade mutiny, however: to take Hina, Natsumi and Ohno under the bridge for a little shrimp wrangling.

Set among the scenic hills of their seaside town, one could imagine that were they any older, Natsumi and Hina would be perfectly content with remaining indoors enjoying the view of the rain from their window. But as Hina's handling of the fishing pole and the tackle have dramatically improved since her arrival, being anywhere but the seaside seems torturous to the young enthusiast. As the rainy season progresses, Hina's desire to fish has turned somewhat into an obsession -- one that could end up becoming detrimental to her school work.

These past two episodes have proven that Hina's motivation or lack thereof to accomplish homework or study is negligible. Even with the time away from the classroom -- an entire week, as noted in Episode 7 -- Hina spent her time making handicrafts of fish rather than cramming for her upcoming exams. In Episode 8, her distraction has seemingly become stronger as she wanders the halls with Natsumi longing for a Tom Sawyer-esque lifestyle of leisurely lounging by the water with a pole in hand.

Encouraging her shirking of scholarly duties is Breakwater Club President Yūki, who reveals that within Nurse Sayaka's office holds an emergency supply of sorts of fishing equipment. Technically, shrimping equipment. The short poles aren't even equipped with a reel, only a line at the end with a bobber, a weight and a hook. With cooler in hand, Yūki and Ohno lead the girls away from their study once again and outdoors, this time to scavenge for shrimp in the brackish water of a local river.

Unlike previous trips, wherein the girls simply set up and dropped their bait into the water, the Club must first acquire a permit. As Ohno explains, the river is maintained by a local preservation group who replenishes the stock of fish, shrimp and other edible creatures so that the population will remain healthy, a byproduct of which is that fishermen can continue to enjoy their trade. The license cost ¥500 for a day's worth of fishing -- the girl's first experience with bureaucracy.

To find the best shrimp, Yūki leads the girls under a pedestrian bridge where the water is shallow enough that simply looking down will reveal the bounty of shrimp waiting for them. All one has to do, according to Ohno, is to use the bait -- crab sticks stolen from Sayaka's fridge -- and lower the line down into the water. The shrimp will take it into its claws and eat it, hook and all, leaving the fisherman the simple task of lifting the line out of the water.

For everyone but Hina, this task is simple. As the shrimp come up, Hina struggles with one thing in particular: timing. Ohno reveals that she waits 18 seconds exactly after the shrimp has grabbed the bait for it to swallow the hook, while Yūki waits 30 seconds. Hina, perhaps due to her manic mind, is all over the place, waiting mere seconds and sometimes, too long. Either way, she continually loses her bait.

The lesson in patience is one that Hina perhaps shouldn't have needed considering her experience fishing for much pickier creatures. Her immaturity shines through, however, as Natsumi finds a discarded cardboard box and makes a knee pad out of it for her to rest on while attempting to figure out a method by which to count in her head.

No one finds it odd that Natsumi found a cardboard box under a bridge and started manhandling it, which is par for the course in terms of supervision within the Breakwater Club. There is no time to question her actions, however, as Hina finally nabs a shrimp and proceeds to scold it for not being quicker to take hold of the hook -- and then she flails as it falls safely back into the water.

One thing is certain: Hina's focus is limited and her desire to succeed in school has been replaced by her passion for learning the many facets of fishing. If there are any responsible adults in Diary of  Our Days at the Breakwater who could supervise her, and perhaps the entire Club's priorities, they, like the slippery shrimp, have yet to poke their heads out from their hiding places.
