As Penn State prepares to bring students back to campus in just under two weeks, the university is outfitting its buildings and spaces with new signs and tech to help keep coronavirus transmission to a minimum.

As you probably guessed, the HUB is no exception. The popular student space received some nifty upgrades over the past few weeks, including reduced seating, social distancing signage, and newly implemented hand sanitizer stations.

Most notably, the HUB’s seating areas have undergone massive changes. Many tables were removed to free up space, while those that remain feature just two seats each.

Additionally, Penn State placed social distancing markers on the HUB’s affectionately named High School Musical stairs to encourage proper social distancing. Each marker encourages students to stay at least 6 feet apart from one another.

Similar social distancing signs were placed outside Jamba Juice and McAlister’s Deli, an area that’s typically very crowded. They encourage students to “be smart” and “stand apart” when possible and follow directional arrows to cut down on unnecessary traffic.

Penn State has also implemented many new hand sanitizer stations around the HUB, adding to those that were already in place. Each now features its own sign…just in case you weren’t sure.

To date, Penn State has purchased “several thousand” hand sanitizing stations to be placed in high-traffic areas around campus. It’s also stockpiled more than two million face masks for students, faculty, and staff.

Additionally, new signs around the HUB remind students to wear their masks, wash their hands, and keep their distance to stay safe amid the pandemic. Penn State previously announced it’ll require students to wear their masks during classes, around campus, and in the community. Those who fail to comply could be met with disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion.

Penn State’s updates to the HUB closely resemble the changes it made around campus when the coronavirus pandemic first began in the spring. Those efforts included implementing social distancing signage at the Nittany Lion Shrine and other on-campus landmarks.
