Harrisburg City Council gave its OK Tuesday night for Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s long planned 11-story building at the corner of Third and Chestnuts Streets in Harrisburg.
The vote was approved with 6-0 vote with city council president Ben Allatt abstaining because he was employed by Harrisburg University when the plan was submitted.
When it was first proposed, a 36-story building was planned. Last year, Harrisburg City Council approved a 17-story tower with a hotel. But when plans for the hotel were scrapped the design had to be updated.
The building is scheduled to be completed in 2023 a year later than previously announced. The project is expected to cost Harrisburg University a projected $100 million. The new academic tower is expected to accommodate at least 1,000 new students in nursing, pharmaceutical sciences and other allied health programs.
The facility will include approximately, 165,000 square feet of finished educational space and 40,000 square feet of unfinished shell space. The building will have student service offices and spaces, advanced manufacturing educational and experiential spaces, health sciences educational and experiential spaces, interactive media educational and production spaces as well as general purpose education offices and facilities.

The City of Harrisburg will host a townhall with Harrisburg University and Baltimore-based Whiting-Turner, the contractor for the project, via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The link for the meeting can be found at www.harrisburgpa.gov/HUtownhall. At the townhall, Local contractors will be able to learn how they can participate in the project.
