In year of COVID-19, Pataskala 'Story Trail' takes different approach - The Newark Advocate

For years, Pataskala has offered a “Story Trail” exhibit along the asphalt walking path that rims the southern edge of Municipal Park.

Large panels affixed to the park’s wooden fence between the path and the Muddy Creek have traditionally carried inspirational quotes, illustrated with local landmarks or children's artwork and the like.

Recently, the panels were updated with a new set of placards featuring local faces and inspirational quotes embodying a range of relationships and traits including kindness, resilience, patience, loyalty and bravery, among others.

At the Aug. 17 Pataskala City Council meeting, Suzanne Hayes and Pataskala Library Director Jeff Rothweiler told city officials about their new “Positively Pataskala” effort.

“The Story Walk took longer this year than in normal years,” Hayes told council. “Normally, we have a lot of student artwork and the stories are written by children in school. That changed this year, when school ended in March (because of COVID).”

She said with the help of a local photographer friend, and donated pictures – as well as a call put out with school district help for still more positive pictures – "this is what we came up with.”

The theme this year, was based on the current pandemic and “the negativity on social media. I chose positivity,” Hayes said, “and I chose ‘Positively Pataskala, Where People Make All the Difference."

Hayes thanked Parks Director Lenier Crawford for his assistance with the project.

“We’ve had a really great response from community members,” Hayes said.

She told council in the future, she would like to see the display include even more boards and move toward the road. Currently, the display starts at about the edge of the Municipal Park playground, and extends to the first major bend in the walking patch.

The music that backs an informative video about the display was composed by local musicians, she said.

“I want to thank you as a city for allowing us to use your space to promote Pataskala,” Hayes said.
