Share your family story in a community quilt project - Tampa Bay Times

St. Petersburg residents are invited to join together to tell their family history, one quilt square at a time. NaKena Cromartie, founder of Sustainable Shift, is using the art of quilting in an attempt to unite the community through the construction of the Black Lives Matter CommUnity Quilt.

The quilt will be made of hundreds of quilting squares, decorated by the community in a way that tells their story or their family history.

“I’ve grown to understand and appreciate the historical significance of quilt-making,” she said. “(It’s) the storytelling and textile production that African slaves used to lead their way to freedom on the Underground Railroad.”

Quilting squares are free and can be picked up and registered at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, 335 2nd Ave. NE, St. Petersburg (10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday). Decorations are limited to markers, paint and hot glue gun embellishments.

Once completed, squares should be returned to the museum no later than Oct. 31. Cromartie will collect the squares and use her “Sew Studio” to assemble the final CommUnity Quilt, which will be displayed at the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

“I believe this story quilt will show a common thread of unity, which is something we all can be a part of and claim a piece of," she said. "The community’s participation will further empower the Black Lives Matter movement in a collective and creative way, while shining light on the progressive legacy of the Greater St. Petersburg-Tampa Bay community.”

Other pick-up and drop-off locations include:

The Well of Life, 833 22nd St. S, St. Petersburg; 1-4 p.m. Sundays only

ARTicles Art Gallery and Custom Framing, 1445 Central Ave., St. Petersburg; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday
