RALEIGH, N.C. – Staying in your own home is one of the best ways to keep you safe against the coronavirus, but for some people, that environment is the most dangerous.

What You Need To Know

  • It took Victoria a few weeks to realize her previous marriage could be deadly

  • Family Advocacy Center says domestic violence hasn't slowed down during the pandemic

  • The U.N. General Assembly defined violence against women in 1993 as "any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, or physiological harm or suffering to women"

Luckily for the Tylers, it's still marital bliss after a few weeks, but it only took the same amount of time in Victoria's last marriage to realize the ending could be deadly.

"It started with yelling and screaming, escalated to pushing and shoving, then became holes being punched in my walls. Me being punched, slapped around" says Victoria.

She was first married in 2006, and stayed in the marriage for 10 years.

"I didn’t feel like I had a way out. I felt trapped. He told me I had no way out. He’d say if I told anyone, he’d lose rank, he would lose our source of income. Be homeless. Say things like, 'no one will believe you anyway,'" she says.

Sabrina Hayes, with the Family Advocacy Center in Fort Bragg, says unfortunately, she hears stories like Victoria's too often, and it hasn't slowed down during the pandemic.

"It could be anyone. My mother, sister, my brother and even my father. Domestic violence doesn’t have a name or face. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime" says Hayes.

Victoria was diagnosed with PTSD and is still learning from her experience. She's hoping her story will help others.

"I hope this helps someone. Even just one person. I hope it reaches the right person and they make a decision that could change" says Victoria.

The U.N. General Assembly defined violence against women in 1993 as "any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, or physiological harm or suffering to women."
