Commander Eileen Collins

NASA’s first female shuttle commander serves as Battle of Flowers Parade grand marshal (April 2020)

While Collins didn’t get to usher in the parade after it was canceled due to COVID-19, her selection was still inspiring. We strive to spotlight community leaders and people making impacts on San Antonio in our regular “Person of Interest” Q&As and Collins was a prime example of that as she shared what it was like to go into space and to be among the few women in the space program.

Rainbow Baby

Taylor Ashley Bates created a blog and podcast to share hope and healing after pregnancy loss. (May 2020)

Regular contributor Bonny Osterhage interviewed Bates and wrote her story in an “as told to” format that highlighted Bates’ voice and the pain and hope she endured through stillbirth, miscarriage and a subsequent pregnancy. We’re happy to report Bates gave birth to a healthy baby boy in October.

Why We Love San Antonio

The COVID-19 pandemic turned our lives upside down, but it also reminded us of one thing: We love San Antonio. Here, locals share why they feel lucky to call the Alamo City Home. (June/July2020)

This feature came together as we were watching the community respond during the early months of the pandemic. We were inspired to see all of the ways in which San Antonio pulled together and worked to share that here through multiple story formats and images.

A Mother’s Mission to Support Families of Gun Violence Victims

After losing her daughter during a mass shooting in Colorado, Sandy Anglin Phillips turned her grief into the local nonprofit that supports families of victims.

Freelance writer Katherine Stinson pitched this story months before it ran and was able to interview Phillips multiple times to give a clear picture of how Phillips’ tragic loss has shaped and driven her life since.

The Making of H-E-B

How the San Antonio supermarket chain found success and a loyal fan base during its 115-year history—and where it goes from here. (August 2020)

We’ve long wanted to write about what makes H-E-B tick. It has a near monopoly on the grocery industry in San Antonio, but locals don’t seem to mind. On the contrary, it has ardent fans who love its products and the way they support the community. As the store responded to the pandemic with more preparation than some governmental entities, now seemed like the time to learn more about what drives the company. Its corporate leaders are notorious for not wanting to talk about themselves, so we looked to the industry at large to learn more.

The History of African American Cattle Brands in San Antonio

Shedding light on the city’s past, Everett Fly provides a look at African American cowboys and land ownership from the 1800s. (September 2020)

We dedicated the magazine’s back page in 2020 to moments in the city’s history. In August, longtime resident and historian Everett Fly shared how the discovery of an African American cemetery led him on a years-long research project into cattle brands and the light they shed on early African American land ownership and ranching in San Antonio.

A Starter Guide to San Antonio Art

Get an inside look at the culturally rich art community that breathes life into the Alamo City. (November 2020)

Then-editor-in-chief Rebecca Fontenot Cord conceived this feature with the idea that it could be a guide for locals to get into the city’s rich art scene—whether as a beginning collector, by viewing public art or by learning more about some of the artists who drive the scene.

Taste History at Golden Wat Noodle House

Golden Wat, the newest venture from the couple behind Cookhouse, turns a painful history into delicious dishes. (November 2020)

Resident food writer Ed Tijerina has had to shift his coverage this year to include tips on enjoying takeout and reporting on how the industry is faring in a year where restaurants were forced to shut down and trim dining room capacities. In this story, he shares how the family history of Susan Kaars-Sypesteyn, whose parents immigrated from Cambodia, is shaping her and Pieter Sypesteyn’s latest eatery. The couple recently announced that venture, Golden Wat, which launched as a pop-up, will take the place of their signature restaurant, The Cookhouse, in early 2021.

How Coach Gregg Popovich’s Impact Goes Beyond Basketball

Whether on the court or in the community, the compassion and character of the Spurs coach shines through. (December 2020)

Aside from his terse one-liners shared in pre- and post-game press conferences, Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich is notorious for not saying much. Freelance writer Kiko Martinez didn’t let that stop him from learning more about the giving character that has defined Pop and the team, talking with nonprofit leaders who’ve gotten to know Popovich and shedding light on how the Spurs have always been about more than just basketball for the sometimes-grumpy coach.
