WILMINGTON — As part of our countdown to 2021, Port City Daily is revisiting some of its biggest stories of 2020.
In what may surprise few who have paid attention to the local news climate this year, 2020’s most-read story is by far the article covering the firing of three Wilmington Police Department officers in June. The officers were inadvertently caught on tape having casual, racist conversations. One conversation included the genocidal ideations of 23-year WPD officer, Kevin Piner.
Fired in the heat of the George Floyd protest movement, the event rocked the Wilmington community, breaking the trust of many. WPD and the city took actions to attempt to rebuild trust and transparency after the incident, including firing the cops and fighting to release the tapes, which a local superior court judge blocked.
Port City Daily was the first to break the news of the firing hours ahead of WPD’s hurriedly called press conference.
