Shit happens, right? But what if, like, shit is happening all the time?
24/7. Non-stop. All-day, everyday.
If the above sums up how you're feeling (we hope not), The Perpetual Disappointments Diary might just be perfect for you (again, we really hope not).
Created by UK-based freelance writer Nick Asbury, the Perpetual Disappointments Diary perfectly encapsulates the feeling of leading a miserable life, with its clean, elegant, and minimalistic design juxtaposed with depressing journaling prompts centered around everyday disappointments and overall feelings of inadequacy.
First published in 2016, the diary has kept up with new editions every year – you can even buy the 2021 edition right now. But still, the general pessimistic outlook you get from its contents has stayed unchanged.
After spotting Kinokuniya Malaysia's highly-shared Facebook post highlighting the diary on December 13, 2020, we were naturally intrigued to see what else was inside, especially considering how some of us (especially this author) tend to be self-loathing pessimists at times.
Here's what we found on the post and on Google after more searches:
The diary makes no bones of what it wants to do. The blurb on the cover even describes itself as a "downbeat journal for pessimists, cynics, and losers everywhere," and that you'll "love it."
Sure you will.
On the back, it also explains itself as an engagement calendar and planner containing disappointing twists, demotivational proverbs, reminders of notable deaths, contact details of people who never call, and a year's worth of Monday stickers, ending with the line "This may not be your year, but this is definitely your diary."
How delightful.
Within the covers are pages filled with spaces and sections that you can use to jot down life events just like any other diary, except that the prompts and cues included focus on all the stuff that you'd normally feel quite crappy about.
There's a planner-style section for you to keep track of all that weight gained throughout the year, the size of debt you've accumulated, the number of public embarrassments you've suffered, and more saddening occurrences that you might be inclined to keep track of.
Another section aims to dig out some of your deepest doubts, fears, and insecurities, and asks you piercing questions about them.
There are also philosophical killjoys like these...
And there's even a page of foreign language phrases in the event you find yourself in a crap situation while abroad. Highly unlikely during the current pandemic, but we'll take it.
All in all, a pretty suitable diary considering everything that's happened in 2020, although we're not sure many will care to ponder on the crap they've had to suffer over the past year.
While you might be inclined to buy one of these diaries thinking it could make for a great conversation starter or as a gift for a friend (pray they don't feel insulted), we sure hope you don't find the contents within the pages too relatable to your own circumstances.
Even if you do, we hope you find a silver lining somewhere.
Because while shit does happen, you just can't grow stuff without a bit of fertilizer, right?
Hope you have a nice life!
