New York state has so far paid more than $55 billion to 3.8 million people who lost their jobs during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. That is 26 years worth of typical unemployment benefits, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
Now, two temporary federal programs are scheduled to end - the day after Christmas.
About 1.1 million New Yorkers would immediately be cut off from benefits, according to a study by The Century Foundation. Nearly 400,000 have already run out.
