Here we go again.
Rumors of a potential Trevor Story trade by the Colorado Rockies have been given new life after completing the deal sending third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals.
On the surface, the trade of Arenado would seem to give the Rockies the salary flexibility to re-sign Story, who will be a free agent following the 2021 season. But after watching the Rockies ship Arenado out of town one year after he signed a $260 million extension, Story would have to think long and hard before re-upping with Colorado.

During Tuesday’s press conference following the Arenado trade, the Rockies tried to pump the brakes on the Story trade rumors. Per the Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes:
Rockies’ GM Jeff Bridich says of situation after Arenado trade “this is not a total tear-down.” Suggests that if it were, they would have already traded other guys, too.
And from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale:
Trevor Story, who’s a free agent after the season, will open the year with the #Rockies, Jeff Bridich says.
Rockies owner Dick Monfort on the #Rockies’ fan backlash: “To be quite honest, I’d probably the same way. Maybe I do feel the same way.’'
If the Rockies put Story on the market, look for the New York Yankees to be mentioned in trade rumors. It’s no secret the Yankees aren’t enamored with Gleyber Torres at shortstop. New York could move Torres to second base, slide the newly re-signed DJ LeMahieu to first base and consider its options with Luke Voit, who led the majors with 22 home runs last season.
The 28-year-old Story is a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient. He’s finished in the top 15 for National League MVP voting in each of the last three years.
