Wednesday’s moves
‘Stro-Show’ headed to Chicago
The Cubs made starting pitching their top priority this offseason and on Wednesday landed one of their top targets, right-hander Marcus Stroman, who agreed to a three-year, $71 million contract. The deal includes an opt-out after Year 2, which guarantees Stroman will earn $50 million over the next two years and could make him a free agent again at age 32. A ground-ball machine, Stroman is extremely athletic and a plus defender. He competes hard and has always pitched with a chip on his shoulder. I’m surprised Stroman didn’t find a five-year deal, like Kevin Gausman and Robbie Ray received, but he’ll probably do just as well or better than them financially if he can stay healthy and pitch to his potential the next two seasons.
