NAGPUR: Maharashtra sent out a statewide security alert after a man was killed and another eight, including two cops, were wounded Saturday night when two communities rioted over a social media post on the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ at Hariharpeth in Akola, forcing authorities to clamp curfew in sensitive pockets and suspend internet services for 36 hours from Sunday noon, reports Soumitra Bose.
Vilas Gaikwad, a 40-year-old electrician, was killed when both sides threw stones at each other after a crowd gathered outside Ramdaspeth police station and alleged an Instagram post linked to the movie has insulted the Prophet. Just then, another group rushed to the Old city police station, alleging that the cops were taking their complaint. The crowd quickly turned into a mob and headed towards a nearby shrine and damaged property and vehicles along the way. This led to a clash between two communities and the cops failed to contain the situation, despite having encountered a similar crisis a few days ago.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis’s office stated Sunday that around 30 people have been arrested so far. It said the situation is peaceful now and Fadnavis, who is also the home minister, is constantly coordinating with the DGP. Sources said the state police top brass have instructed SPs and CPs across the state to be on high alert and watch out for hate messages and signs of communal flare-ups.
“A shrine was burned down in the presence of police. A man was killed just because he was in an autorickshaw that had religious symbols of another community pasted on it,” said four-time corporator Sajid Khan Pathan, accusing the government and police of failing to stop riots in the city. The victim was a commoner and did not have ties with “any outfit or organisation or party”, said SP Sandeep Ghughe.
BJP MLA Randhir Savarkar said deputy CM Fadnavis has sent police reinforcements from Amravati to Akola and senior officers have rushed to the city to bring the situation under control.
“Some communities had created special WhatsApp groups to spread hate. Police were outnumbered by a mob that attacked another community. There was intelligence failure for sure,” Savarkar alleged.
Akola district collector Nima Arora said students appearing in exams were being exempted from curfew restrictions. The collector said she would send a proposal to the government for a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the dead man’s family.
Police were monitoring a fight among two groups in the sensitive Kamptee area of Nagpur district following an argument over parking Sunday morning. Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said stringent provisions of the law would be pressed against anyone linked with any clash, instigation or rumour-mongering.
