Naseeruddin Shah stands out among Bollywood celebrities as someone who has consistently refused to submit to any form of authority and fearlessly expresses his opinions, particularly when it comes to political issues. The actor, who recently told indianexpress.com that hate against Muslims is “fashionable” in this day and age, has now vehemently criticised Sudipto Sen’s controversial film The Kerala Story and said that he has no intention of watching the movie.
“Worthwhile films like Bheed, Afwaah, Faraaz, all three collapsed. Nobody went to see them, but they are flocking to see The Kerala Story which I have not seen, and I don’t intend to see, because I have read enough about it,” Shah told India Today. The actor also called this a “dangerous trend”.
Naseeruddin Shah, however, mentioned that he was hopeful that things would eventually change for good. “On the flip side, I have hope that this atmosphere of hate gets fatiguing. How long can you go on spreading hate? I think and I hope that the way it has suddenly engulfed us all, it will also disappear. But it won’t be soon,” the Taj: Reign of Revenge actor stated.
Responding to indianexpress.com’s query regarding certain films and shows being used as a vehicle of disinformation and propaganda, Shah had said that the mood on-screen was a reflection of what was happening on the ground: unabashed Islamophobia which was being used to get votes in elections.
“These are worrying times absolutely. The kind of stuff that’s pure, undisguised propaganda is being lapped up and it’s a reflection of the zeitgeist of the times. Muslim-hating is fashionable these days, even among educated people. It’s what the ruling party has very cleverly tapped into this nerve. We talk about secular this, democracy that, so why are you introducing religion into everything?” Shah asked.
The 72-year-old actor also opined that the only way to fight bigotry, propaganda and films designed to spread disinformation was through artistes speaking up and using their voices in making a difference.
When asked what is the role of an artiste in these fractured times, Naseeruddin Shah said ensuring that they speak up and make it a point to not champion anything that doesn’t align with their worldview.

“To make your voice heard, if it carries any weight; to not participate in movies which clash with your own beliefs, or any work which clashes with your beliefs. To make one’s voice heard, which is unfortunately not the case with a lot of people whose voice, if it were raised, would make a difference. But they’re all scared. They all want to be on the winning side,” Shah told indianexpress.com.
