LE ROY — Walking up to the Woodward Memorial Library, lawns signs decorate the path.

But these aren’t just any signs. These signs tell a story and take the place of one of the library’s popular in-person program.

Each week through Aug. 21 the library at 7 Wolcott St. will post pages of a new story on its front sidewalk.

This week the pages tell the story of “Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party” by James Dean and Kimberly Dean.

“Libraries have been doing (story walks) for awhile, but our system put them together for all of the libraries to borrow, so we’ll be rotating through different ones throughout the summer,” said library director Betsy Halvorsen. “We just thought it would be a nice way, since we are not doing in-person storytime — they’re all virtual right now – it would be a nice thing for people to do when they’re walking around the neighborhood or if they are coming into the library with their kids, they can kind of walk up the walk and have a story along the way.”

Stories will be changed every week on Friday.

Visitors may read the stories and remain socially distant while doing so if others are present.

Halvorsen said a lot of people seem to enjoy the storytime walk, and with continued positive response, the library might continue the program through the fall before the snow falls.

Children will be able to use the activity toward the library’s summer reading program points. Children who are part of the library’s reading challenge will be able to get a badge for reading the stories.

The library reopened in July with limited services. Those services include browsing, checkout and up to one 30-minute computer session per day. There is no seating, meeting or play programs. Masks must be worn at all times and items may only be returned to the book drop.

The library’s summer programs for children, teens and adults are being offered in a virtual format. These include storytimes, craft-to-go programs, digital escape rooms, Zoom programs and trivia using the video conferencing software program, and the adult cookbook club and cooking decorating, among others.
