If you thought Yoan Moncada looked a little off during Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers, you were right.

Rick Renteria revealed after the game that the White Sox third baseman has been dealing with a nagging injury for about a week, and it may cost him a game now.

“We’ve been pushing him, pushing him, pushing him, and you know they’re not robots,” Renteria said. “It’s been out of necessity, we’ll see how we deal with it tomorrow. Don’t be surprised if he’s not in the lineup.

“When you push a guy, with the amount of time that he was down, and we continue to push him, obviously hoping that we were going to be able to get him a day, or two, or so, once he was returning, and gradually get him in. Obviously, that just didn’t happen.

“But he’s been playing through it and pushing and I think we saw the effects a little bit more visibly in his body language.”

Moncada wasn’t sharp with several throws throughout the game, and botched a couple of tough plays that he typically makes. He also grimaced after a couple of swings, making onlookers wonder if he was ok.

But Renteria said Moncada was simply dealing with fatigue and “body aches,” as the White Sox ramped him up into game shape in a very short amount of time after he recovered from COVID-19. He returned to the team on July 16, giving him only eight days to prepare for Opening Day. On top of that, he’s only sat out one game, back on July 26, since injuries to other Sox position players have precluded him from taking more days off to rest.

But now, with the games stacking up in a shortened season, the White Sox may not have a choice but to give Moncada a breather.

“I don’t want to have this kid get hurt, and I think he’s been pushing through a lot, so we’ll see how we deal with it tomorrow.”
