Hold everything.
The prevailing thought among MLB insiders is that the Colorado Rockies will look to trade two-time All-Star shortstop Trevor Story, who’s scheduled to be a free agent after the season, before the July 30 non-waiver deadline.
The Denver Post reports “Story does not intend to re-sign with Colorado.” However the Denver Post also reports that the Rockies, knowing that, still might decide to hold on to the 28-year-old Story at the deadline.
Rockies interim general manager Bill Schmidt said Saturday that it’s not a certainty that Story’s days in Colorado are drawing to a close. Asked if it’s become apparent that Story won’t stay in Colorado, Schmidt answered, “Not necessarily. We’ll see what happens. We are not at that point.”

The Denver Post reports that if a trade is going to materialize, it “would probably not happen before the Rockies host the All-Star Game on July 13 at Coors Field.”
Both USA Today’s Bob Nightengale and MLB Network’s Jon Morosi report the Oakland A’s might have interest in trading for Story, currently on the injured list with a sore elbow.
At first glance, the New York Yankees don’t seem like a fit for Story, a two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient. The Yankees have Gleyber Torres at shortstop, plus the team already has a pair of $300-million contracts on the payroll (Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton) and the time is approaching to give right fielder Aaron Judge a massive extension (he is eligible for free agency after the 2022 season).
But general manager Brian Cashman could decide the Yankees are better off with Torres moving back to second base and sliding DJ LeMahieu to first. If that’s the case, the Yankees could chase Story, Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa or Los Angeles Dodgers’ Corey Seager, all of whom will hit the open market after the season and will command hefty nine-figure salaries.
