If the Colorado Rockies are going to trade Trevor Story, there’s no time like the present.
The shortstop, who will be a free agent following the season, is hitting .400 over his last eight games, boosting his trade value as the July 30 non-waiver deadline.
But the Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla is quick to pump the brakes on a possible Yankees-Rockies trade.
The Yankees, hurting for a big bat and a slick glove after entering the season with World Series aspirations, might be tempted to up their ante in trade discussions for Story. It would be foolishly optimistic, however, to hope New York would include 24-year-old infielder Gleyber Torres in a deal for Story.

Story, like Torres, has a pair of All-Star appearances on his resume. And the 28-year-old Story realizes he could be in his final days with the Rockies. But he’s trying to ignore the distractions created by the impending trade deadline, according to Kiszla:
“I know that’s a possibility,” said Story, when I asked him about a trade to an unknown destination. “That’s obviously kind of out my hands. So I try not to think about it. There’s not much I can do about it. ... I really try to be present, be here with my guys … I love these guys. I really try to entrench myself in the everyday battles that go on.”
Colorado sits in fourth place in the National League West, 17.5 games behind the first-place San Francisco Giants. If the Rockies don’t trade Story, they most likely face the scenario of watching him walk, with nothing more than a draft pick as compensation.
