Netflix movie “The Noel Diary” starring Justin Hartley has been filming along the Connecticut shoreline for the past month, first shooting in Stamford, then Bridgeport and later Madison and Essex. When the holiday film landed in Stamford in May, Wilton cookie shop The Painted Cookie was contacted to get in on the movie making process.
Susan Schmitt, owner of The Painted Cookie, said that the film’s prop manager reached out to her saying the shop “came highly recommended.”
“He reached out to us by text,” she said. “At first, I wasn’t sure it was for real. I got the text, and I replied and said to please call us the following day, and that’s when we talked to the prop manager.”
The Painted Cookie opened in 2013 as an allergen-free bakery, and according to Schmitt, being able to accommodate such dietary needs was one of the reasons why she thinks her shop was on Netflix’s radar.
“They loved our designs and the fact that we were nut and sesame free and could offer vegan, dairy and gluten-free options — that was really big to them,” she said.
Schmitt shared her work for Netflix on The Painted Cookie’s Instagram account last week, saying her Christmas sprinkle cookies and gingerbread men were used in a scene with “Die Hard” actress Bonnie Bedelia. Her shop also provided its “signature teal bakery boxes,” Schmitt noted, which she said she hopes “will be seen somewhere on a counter or table” in the scene.
Schmitt said she “doesn’t want to make that big of a deal” out her cookies’ potential appearance in the film — but that doesn’t tamper her excitement to be included.
“It's very exciting to see if they're in the background somewhere,” she said. “I think we've been taking a more reserved approach because you never know what's going to end up on the cutting room floor…But what a great opportunity. I never thought our cookies could be in a movie.”
