There has been plenty of buzz in the past about the Oakland A’s being a potential destination for Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story should the Rockies trade him before the July 30 trade deadline. However, one MLB.com analyst is saying with certainty that it will happen.
In this article analyzing the biggest trade needs for each contender to fill, MLB.com’s Mike Petriello discusses the shortstop position and mentions two teams that are in need of upgrading at the position: The Oakland A’s and the Cincinnati Reds.
Here’s why this writer is predicting the Colorado Rockies will trade Trevor Story to the Oakland A’s.
In his article, Petriello discusses the Reds and A’s needing shortstops and two potential trade options being the strongest. That short list includes Colorado’s Trevor Story and Minnesota’s Andrelton Simmons. At the end of his discussion, Petriello writes, “Story to Oakland, Simmons to Cincinnati. Mark it down.”
So why does Story to Oakland make so much sense? As Petriello mentions, only two teams have received worse offensive output from shortstop this season than Oakland. It’s one of the reasons why the Story-to-Oakland drums have been banging for quite some time.
Entering Thursday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field, Story is coming off a three-game series against the San Diego Padres where he looked every bit like one of the leading shortstops in the game today. Story went 4-for-9 in the series with three doubles, three RBI, and a pair of stolen bases. He’s currently tied for sixth in the National League in stolen bases with 11 and 11th in the NL with 15 doubles.
The hot streak against San Diego came after an 0-for-14 road trip following Story being activated from the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the Rockies will actually trade Story. Interim general manager Bill Schmidt has hinted that Colorado may instead put a qualifying offer on Story should the team not be able to work out any kind of contract extension past this season.
And let’s not forget that there are also plenty of people (including ESPN’s Jeff Passan) linking Story to the New York Yankees in a trade as well.
