One win away. That’s what both the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers are tonight heading into Game 6 of the World Series. The Dodgers are a win from winning it all and the Rays are a win away from sending Charlie Morton to the mound with the chance to further cement his legacy as Mr. Game 7.
Something about tonight just feels good. With the Dodgers sending Tony Gonsolin to the mound, the Rays have a chance to make an impact early. We shall see what tonight brings.

Blake Snell took the mound in the bottom of the first and struck out the side.
This is 2nd time in his career that Blake Snell has faced 3 batters in the first inning and struck out all 3. It also happened June 3, 2018 at Mariners. (He finished that game with 12 K in 6 IP.)

This is a great start for the Rays that have been on the opposite side of a first-inning deficit for the majority of this postseason.
Willy Adames with a strikeout to start the inning. No big deal. Especially with Kevin Kiermaier crushing a very aesthetically pleasing double to deep right field.
Dylan Floro came in for Gonsolin with Arozarena coming to the plate.
Floro was certainly prepared for the moment, deviating from his normal plan of attack to get a strikeout with three straight curveballs.
Snell’s strikeout streak ended, though, he got Muncy to groundout to begin the bottom of the inning. Snell got back to his strikeout streak getting Smith and Bellinger with swinging strikeouts.
Alex Wood in to pitch for the Dodgers and gets Manuel Margot, Brandon Lowe, and Austin Meadows retired in order.
Does not bother me with the 1-0 lead still intact.
Chris Taylor leads off with a single to leadoff the bottom of the third. He made solid contact with a 105.4 EV on a Snell fastball in the zone.
Joey Wendle has really been outstanding at third defensively with a catch launched right at him and a good play to get Barnes out.
Snell closes the door on the inning striking Betts out. Something is off with Betts this World Series at the plate.
The last time Mookie Betts swung and missed 3+ times in a game was 9/18/20 vs. Colorado.

Mookie Betts is great, obviously. And he's had huge moments in the field and on the bases lately, plus a few key hits.
But overall in the NLCS/WS, he's at .240/.333/.340 in 57 PA.

Given the Dodgers propensity for two-out runs this is a really exciting moment. You know, like finding extra fries at the bottom of the bag. Still plenty of game left.
Rays still lead 1-0 after three.
Alex Wood with another 1-2-3 inning keeps it just a one-run game. He is getting a lot of whiffs from Rays hitters on his knuckle curve and sinker.
Blake Snell is putting on a historic performance in Game 6. He not only struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, he got Seager, Turner, and Muncy all swinging.
Betts/Seager/Turner are 0-for-6 w/ 6 Ks.

The Dodgers are overthinking this a little bit and I’m ok with it. After getting Arozarena with three straight changeups they tried again with Pedro Baez on the mound. Resulting in a single.
Meadows grounded out to second to close the top half of the inning. At some point some insurance runs sure would be nice.
How many ways can I say how great Blake Snell has been. He threw 14 more pitches and and had another 1-2-3 inning. Interestingly, the fifth inning was the first of the game without a Snell strikeout.
Even in the cases where contact has been made, aside from the single to Taylor in the third, the mighty bats of the Dodgers have been cooled by Snell’s fire.
With all of that said, one run still leaves this game at-risk with a single swing of the bat.

Victor Gonzalez has a 40% whiff rate on his sinker so far tonight. In the top of the sixth he got Lowe, Margot, and Wendle to all strikeout swinging.

The lack of run support makes it hard to leave Snell out there to face the Dodgers lineup much longer.
Snell leaves a slider middle of the zone to Barnes that he hits for a single. That will mark the end of Snell’s night as Cash pulls him for Nick Anderson as Mookie Betts comes to the plate.

Mookie Betts with a double that takes a funky bounce off the side fence that moves Barnes to third. A wild pitch next and we have a tie ballgame.
Seager comes to the plate and hits into a fielder’s choice and the Rays try again to throw Betts out at home and come up short again. Dodgers take a 2-1 lead.

Ugh.
Turner with a blast to left that barely stayed in the park for an out.
Dodgers lead 2-1 after six.
Zunino got a single and no runs were scored, again.
Will Smith with a leadoff double off Pete Fairbanks at the bottom of the inning. The Rays chose to intentionally walk Joc Pederson after getting Bellinger and Taylor out. Thankfully Barnes with a pop up.
Three more up and three more down. Not a run was scored.
Fairbanks back out for the Rays in the bottom of the eighth. With two strikes he gives up a blast to Betts that extends the Dodgers lead to 3-1.
Margot, Brosseau, and Adames all strike out to end the season. Dodgers win 3-1.
The final outcome of this game will sting for Rays fans, though, one run was not going to be enough to beat the Dodgers. It has been an amazing run all season and unfortunately this is how it closes.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the 2020 World Series Champions.
