The presumption around the majors is that the Rockies will attempt to trade all-star shortstop Trevor Story prior to the July 30 deadline.
Story is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season and sources have told The Post that Story does not intend to re-sign with Colorado. A trade, however, would probably not happen before the Rockies host the All-Star Game on July 13 at Coors Field.
But Rockies interim general manager Bill Schmidt said Saturday that it’s not a certainty that Story’s days in Colorado are drawing to a close.
Asked if it’s become apparent that Story won’t stay in Colorado, Schmidt answered, “Not necessarily. We’ll see what happens. We are not at that point.”
Schmidt said the same thing about right-hander Jon Gray, who’s also in the final year of his contract. Gray went on the 10-day injured list Saturday with an injury to his right elbow and forearm. The Rockies are awaiting the results of an MRI.
A number of contending teams could use Story in their lineup as a half-season rental player this season, including Oakland and the New York Yankees. Schmidt, however, said there has not been a lot of trade discussion.
“Some clubs have reached out and expressed (interest), if we get to that point. But there has not really been anything to talk about. … There is nothing really to follow up on.”
Schmidt, who took over the GM job on April 26 after Jeff Bridich resigned, has said he would like to be included in the Rockies’ search for a permanent GM when the club begins its search at the end of the season.
Schmidt touched on a variety of topics on Saturday:
Rockies’ current talent level: Schmidt broke out some statistics to illustrate how close he believes the Rockies are to turning the corner. The club entered Saturday night’s game vs. Oakland with a 23-35 record, including a 4-22 record away from Coors Field.
“We lost 17 games in May, we went 11-17,” Schmidt said. “In nine of those games, from the seventh inning on, or in the case of a doubleheader, from the fifth inning on, we were a base hit from tying the game or going ahead.
“We had 24 situations. We walked once and we were 0-for-23. To me, it’s about learning how to win, being productive and making productive outs. I think we have done a better job of late.”
Schmidt went on to point out that if the Rockies had gone 4-5 in those nine games, the Rockies would have been 15-13 in May.
“If that was the case, what are you saying about the club?” Schmidt asked. “You would probably look at it and say they are making progress and getting better.”
He also noted that aside from veterans Charlie Blackmon, C.J. Cron and Story, the Rockies are relatively inexperienced in the field.
“We have guys who still have to learn to play and learn to execute,” he said, adding that even potential all-star Ryan McMahon is relatively inexperienced. “But sooner or later they just have to get it done. … We are trying to figure out who’s going to grow and eventually fill the spots.”
Debuts for Ryan Rolison, Ryan Vilade. Rolison, a lefty starter, and Vilade, an outfielder, are both playing for Triple-A Albuquerque. They appear to be banging on the big-league door. Schmidt said both have a chance to make their debuts this season.
“There is a chance that could happen,” Schmidt said. “Both Ryans are making good progress.”
